A threatened landscape, peatlands have vanished across much of Scotland, but the RSPB is helping to preserve this vital area of internationally important habitat. Summer is the time to come, when golden plovers, hen harriers and greenshanks breed. Opening timesReserve open at all times; visitor centre is open Easter to end of October, daily 9 am to 5.30 pm. Entrance chargesFree, but donations to help us continue our work here are welcome. Information for familiesThe visitor centre has a selection of games, jigsaws and activities for children. There are Wildlife Explorer backpacks available free of charge for children to take out on the trail to explore the wildlife on the reserve. Families regularly go on the twice-weekly guided walks. Information for dog ownersIt is requested that dogs are not walked on the Dubh Lochan Trail or guided walks and are kept under close control over the rest of the reserve at all times to avoid disturbance to breeding birds and deer. A forest track near the visitor centre has provision for exercising dogs What can I do?The life is being sucked out of the Flow Country.
