About
Fore Wood is a stretch of peaceful woodland near Crowhurst, dotted by gyhlls – steep-sided little ravines in the sandstone where rare ferns grow and wildlife thrives. In the spring, Fore Wood is a riot of Bluebells and Wood Anemones, with Early Purple Orchids adding to the show, an ideal place for East Sussex walks.
This ancient woodland is a mix of Hornbeam, oak and Sweet Chestnut trees. We carefully manage the woodland for the benefit of the wildlife using coppicing – a traditional woodland management practice.
Fore Wood is one of the best places for wildlife in the UK and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
At a glance
No car park on-site however RSPB members can park at Crowhurst village hall, 800m walk from the site. No height restrictions. No bike racks.

Nature trails access: Walk from the village on roadside pavement and across fields with several stiles. Once into the wood there are several steps before visitors get onto the trails. A waymarked trail with arrow posts of 1.75 miles (2.5 km) is uneven, soft and muddy during wet periods, with several long slopes.Two benches to rest and enjoy the wooded surroundings.

BBQs are a fire risk, endangering other people and the precious wildlife and habitats here. They are not permitted on the reserve at any time.
Dogs are allowed on the reserve but must be kept strictly under control. The reserve is managed as a safe home for breeding birds, so please keep dogs on a lead at all times. This nature reserve is an important place for wildlife.
Assistance dogs are welcome in all parts of the reserve.
