The big clean-up

Litter is a real problem in our wild places, but you could help do something about it.

One adult and three young children on a sand dune, litter picking with a clear binbag and litter pickers.

Team up with your family, friends and neighbours and clean up your patch. You'll be amazed at the difference you can make (and nature will be so grateful). There are also national litter-picking campaigns you can take part in, find out more about those below.

Did you know:

About 2.25 million pieces of litter are dropped in UK streets every year?

Estimated time: Under an hour Season: Autumn, Summer, Spring Skill level: Easy

Instructions

Choose an area you'd like to clean up and then make sure you have the owner's permission to do so (most people will be delighted that you want to help but always check first). Think about how safe it will be for you to do the litter pick there.

An adult and a child, stood on the bank of a lake, as the adult holds open a yellow bin bag and the child puts something inside it.

Pick a date and time and then recruit your team – it might be just your family (adult supervision required) or you could get other members of your community involved too.
