Activity

Habitat explorers

This activity is about discovering how many habitats are in an area. You could do it on school ground or even as part of a visit to one of our reserves.

Two children perched on a woodland floor hunting for bugs with small nets.

This is a practical science activity that could be undertaken at any stage of learning about habitats.

Estimated time: 1-2 hours Season: All year Skill level: Easy

Instructions

Think about the type of habitats that animals like to live in. Look at the ratings on the habitat scorecard and think about why some habitats score higher than others. Hold a class discussion about where you might find the most wildlife and why.

You may want to make a map of your school grounds showing where the different habitats are.

A group of school children being lead through a long grass meadow by their teacher.

Get them thinking

Here are some prompts to help with learning:

  • Before you start, does anyone know what kind of habitats the school might have?
  • Why do you think some habitats score higher on the nature scorecard than others?
  • Why does having a greater variety of habitat gain a higher score?
