There's not long to go until the Woodland Warriors holiday club starts at local nature reserve
RSPB Scotland is calling all explorers looking for an adventure this October half term to join them in discovering how to survive in the woods. The charity will help budding adventurers learn the skills they would need and explore what natural items they could use to help them.
Surrounded by the amazing loch and woods of RSPB Scotland Loch Leven, Woodland Warriors is a holiday club like no other, offering opportunities to get close to nature and learn some survival skills between 17 and 21 October.
Participants will have the chance to learn to whittle, build dens, track wildlife and light a fire along with the art of camouflage. They will also be encouraged to explore the reserve and spot the creatures who call the woodland and wetlands home. However, in this child-led learning activity, the children call the shots and set the direction supported by trained forest schools leaders.
Craig Leitch is the Outdoor Learning Officer at RSPB Scotland Loch Leven. He said: "Woodland Warriors is a lot of fun. We get ready and plan a whole range of activities but it's really the children who lead the way and that's brilliant. They find the best parts of the reserve to play games, explore and spot wildlife. It's a wonderful way for the children to connect with nature and grow in confidence. We spend all our time outside and every day there's a new discovery."
The special holiday club - which runs regularly during summer and autumn school holidays - offers children over eight years old the chance to become woodland adventurers. With the choice to book for one or more days or the whole week, there is an option to suit all families and budgets.
Woodland Warriors runs from 10am - 3.30pm from Monday 17 until Friday 21 October 2016. Booking is essential and places are limited. RSPB Wildlife Explorer Members £16 per day, £64 per week. Full price £20 per day, £80 per week. Children must bring clothes appropriate for being outside and a packed lunch.
