The residents of Mallard Court care home, in Bridlington, have created their own Puffin Muffins for a competition being held by RSPB Bempton Cliffs, to raise awareness of the plight of the puffin.
The award-winning, East Yorkshire nature reserve is encouraging the public to bake and decorate buns to raise awareness of puffins, which can be seen on the cliffs between mid-April and mid-July. Last year the iconic little seabird was added to the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species - making it as vulnerable to extinction as the African elephant or lion.
Maria Prchlik, Bempton Cliffs' Marketing Officer, explained: "A small rise in sea temperatures can affect the puffins' food supply as their favourite meal, sandeels, feed on plankton, which thrive in cooler waters.
"Puffins are by far our visitors' favourite seabird on the cliffs and baking has becoming an increasingly popular pastime. By combing the two we hope to be able to remind people that, not only can puffins be seen here on the cliffs, but that we also need their help to find ways of keeping the puffin population stable."
Residents at the nursing home on Avocet Way decorated buns with butter cream and edible puffin cake toppers. Amongst those taking part was June Chippindale. Along with her parents, June ran Lily's Café on The Promenade for many years and baking was something she took real pleasure in. Being close to the Grand Pavillion theatre, later the 3 B's theatre (part of the old Leisure World complex), actors appearing on stage would pop across for lunch and she remembers comedian Dave Allen loving her home-baked cakes.
Another resident, who was keen to get involved, grew up on the Shetland Isles and recalls seeing puffins there, particularly on Fetlar - one of the northerly islands. In his part of the world the local name for them was Tammie Norrie.
Mallard Court Manager, Sarah Kirk, said: "We really want our residents to retain strong links with the community. A good number of those living here are local and have spent many happy hours up on the cliff tops. So making cakes to help the puffins' cause is an activity that triggers lots of good memories."
Anyone wishing to make a Puffin muffin can simply get baking then send a photo of the end result to the team at Bempton Cliffs via Facebook. The competition runs until late July when a winner will be selected from the entries. First prize is a set of RSPB cake tins.
