Pheasants and partridges

These include medium and large-sized gamebirds, from the grey and red-legged partridges to the large-bodied pheasants, all with short, curved bills, small heads, rounded bodies and short legs.

Most are social birds, often found in family groups, but in the pheasants the males have little to do with the family. They are all resident species in the UK. There are many more species of pheasants in Asia and North America, with the red-legged partridge originating from continental Europe.
