What we're looking for

Orkney is a very special place for birds and wildlife with 13 RSPB reserves which offer visitors and residents a wonderful opportunity to get close to nature. Across the summer we will be holding a number of events and activities to encourage people to do just that - which is where you come in! This summer we are planning to: - offer guided walks on the RSPB reserve at Brodgar - show live (and recorded) CCTV images from a hen harrier nest - in the Tourist Information Centre in Kirkwall - show people seabirds from the Saturday NorthLink Ferry to and from Scrabster. We are looking to put together a team of volunteers to help us with any or all of these events. Your role will be to talk to people about Orkney's amazing birds and where best to see them. We want you to help raise the profile of the RSPB locally and gain support for our work.

The skills you need

You need to be open and friendly with a genuine interest in wildlife. You should enjoy talking to all sorts of people and have the confidence to strike up a conversation. You do not have to be a bird expert but should have some knowledge of birds and be willing to learn more - training will be given.

Your time

Minimum:
1/2 day per week or more (either 10am - 1pm or 1pm - 4pm)
Duration:
4 months
Period:
Mid-May to mid-August

What's in it for you?

This is a great opportunity to meet people from all over the UK and abroad and enthuse them about Orkney's amazing birds. We can help you gain valuable skills, experience and an insight into the work of the RSPB. Most of all, you will have the satisfaction of sharing your interest in and knowledge of Orkney's wildlife with a wide range of people.

Appropriate training will be provided with ongoing support from RSPB Staff. Expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary. Training will be in early May. The RSPB is the UK charity working to secure a healthy environment for birds and wildlife, helping to create a better world for all of us. We belong to BirdLife International, the global partnership of bird conservation organisations. Your time and skills could make a real difference to the work of the RSPB and it would be great if you could join us.
