What we're looking for

RSPB Pagham Harbour and the nearby RSPB Medmerry reserves together provide an internationally important wetland site for wildlife. The Visitor Centre at Sidlesham is a big part of our reserve operations and is the place to learn more information about the reserve and the RSPB, as well as get a welcome cup of tea! Key to this is our dedicated team of Welcome volunteers who ensure that there's always a friendly face to greet anyone who visits the reserves. We're looking to build this team, so are looking for more volunteers from all backgrounds to help us enthuse visitors to RSPB Pagham & Medmerry. Key tasks would include: * Helping visitors get the most out of their visit by chatting to them about the site, the wildlife that lives there and the work that we do (NB you don't need to be a wildlife expert, we'd teach you all you need to know beforehand) *Helping to answer visitors questions, listening to their feedback and ideas about the reserves. * inspire & enthuse visitors about the work of the RSPB by sharing our stories, and encourage them to support the RSPB through membership, volunteering or donations. *Explain our Covid safety arrangements to help everyone have a safe visit. We'd also really welcome your help with COVID-safe activities, such as wiping down touchpoints in the Visitor Centre and toilets. However, if this is something you'd rather not do, then just let us know. We'd provide you with everything you need to carry out your role including a full induction and training relevant to the role. Your time and skills will make a real difference to the work of the RSPB and it would be great if you could join us.

The skills you need

You'll need great interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with lots of different people, from all backgrounds and ages, in a positive way. You will also be able to enthuse and inspire adults and children about the wonders of the natural world with an upbeat and engaging manner. You do not need to be a wildlife expert or birdwatcher – we can train you in this - it's far more important that you have an interest in and can engage with people and fire their enthusiasm about nature. You will be keen and able to assist people to get the most from their visit and be comfortable in asking for support for the RSPB. You will be happy to work outside, as well as willing to pitch in and be part of the team. We welcome applications from people of all ages and backgrounds and are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in all our work and activities.

Your time

Half-day or whole day per week, on weekdays and/or weekends
All year, esp. at busy times during summer

What's in it for you?

You will be joining a really friendly, growing, team working for nature at RSPB Pagham Harbour & Medmerry, meeting new people, gaining experience and learning new skills. This is an opportunity to be part of the country's largest nature conservation charity. We provide induction and training for the role and you will be able to access a comprehensive development programme. You will be given all the support you need to undertake your role.
