What we're looking for

The RSPB's Giving Nature a Home in Schools programme aims to bring thousands of primary school children across Cardiff closer to nature by connecting them with the nature in their school grounds. As a Giving Nature a Home in Schools Volunteer you'll play an essential role in this programme. You'll be responsible for delivering sessions in schools helping children to explore nature and create simple wildlife habitats in their school grounds; igniting their curiosity, showing them the difference they can make to their environment and motivating them to spend more time outdoors. Studies show children are becoming increasingly distant from nature. As a result, our children are missing out. Experiencing natural places is beneficial to everyone, especially children; for their health, wellbeing, personal and social development and essential in helping children develop positive attitudes towards nature. Your natural enthusiasm and knowledge will be vital in encouraging and inspiring children and their teachers to take an interest in the wildlife on their doorstep and make their school grounds more nature-friendly.

The skills you need

You'll be enthusiastic about the natural world and keen to share this enthusiasm with young people. You'll have a sound knowledge and understanding of wildlife and be happy to share this using language and activities appropriate for 8 to 11 year olds (or younger). You'll be confident working with whole classes of children and providing advice for teachers who wish to extend the learning from your sessions.

Your time

Once a month
Ongoing until March 2022
Year Round

What's in it for you?

In this role you'll be helping children in your local schools to connect with nature and live healthier lives; potentially sparking an interest in nature that could last a lifetime. You'll be playing an active role helping the RSPB grow support for nature by building and inspiring a young Cardiff community that cares about nature and wants to save it. In so doing this is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference to wildlife in your area.
