What we're looking for

RSPB local groups are community based groups, run entirely by volunteers, that promote the aims and objectives of the RSPB in the local community. They offer RSPB members and the public the opportunity to become involved in, learn about and assist the organisation in its work to save nature. They run events and activities like indoor talks and outdoor walks/wildlife watching trips. They also fundraise and campaign for the RSPB and attend local community events to further enthuse and inspire people to support the RSPB. Tonbridge local group would like to engage more with the public at local events eg, raise awareness of RSPB, inspire more people about nature and wildlife etc. You would: • identify events such as village fêtes where we could raise funds and raise awareness. • contact venues such as garden centres where we could have a presence in connection with national events such as the Big Garden Birdwatch RSPB.org.uk/bgbw • organise participation, including a rota of helpers, materials and props, setting up and clearing down. • liaise with Tonbridge local group and the South East Regional Office to ensure activities are coordinated with other events taking place.

The skills you need

• Good organisation skills. • Tactful in managing the other volunteers helping at each event. • Good at communicating with venue organisers. • Enthusiastic about, and a good understanding of, the goals of the RSPB (not essential as information can be provided).

Your time

Minimum:
Assume 4-5 events per year, each needing around 4 hours preparation plus 7 hours participation. Plus 5-6 evenings per year for committee meetings
Duration:
Ongoing
Period:
All year round

What's in it for you?

• Most events take place in the summer and are good fun to be part of, working with other volunteers in a successful and friendly group. • Chance to meet a wide range of people and communicate about the RSPB and the local group. • Satisfaction of raising funds for the work of the RSPB.

Notes

You would be able to claim out-of-pocket expenses from the group charity bank account. You would have full support from a dedicated and experienced committee of volunteers, as well as support from staff at the RSPB South East Regional Office and the Volunteering Development Department at HQ. Tonbridge is a friendly group always ready to welcome new and non RSPB members to our monthly indoor meetings which are held September - April inclusive on one Wednesday each month. These meetings are followed by field trips on the Saturday and Wednesday, which also run in May and June.
