Haweswater RSPB Reserve

What we're looking for

The Haweswater Badger Hide provides people the opportunity to enjoy watching their first badgers in the wild. We would like to invite enthusiastic volunteers to join us in our work to continue inspiring and educating visitors about these elusive animals. As a Badger Hide Guide you will be responsible for preparing the hide before visitors arrive; this will include setting up the hot drink making station, ensuring hide windows and floors are clean, and preparing the badger viewing area. Following this you will welcome pre-booked visitors and lead an engaging 1.5 hour guided badger watching experience to up to six people.

The skills you need

We are looking for people with a big enthusiasm for badgers! You also need to be reliable, with excellent attention to detail, and great time management skills. As you will be welcoming and guiding groups of various ages and backgrounds to the Badger Hide, a personable, diplomatic manner, and a confidence in starting conversations, would be ideal. An existing knowledge of badger ecology would be beneficial. Due to the remote location of Naddle Farm, and the lack of public transport, you will be required to have your own transport to travel to and from the Badger Hide.

Your time

Monday evenings to suit. Pref 1 per month.
All year round

What's in it for you?

This role is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, and a unique chance to spend time closely observing badgers. You will gain an insight into badger ecology through the experience and expertise of your Line Manager, and will be an important part of supporting wildlife on this reserve. As a Badger Hide Guide, you will have the opportunity to occasionally use the hide on free evenings to enhance your understanding of these animals.
