What we're looking for

Our RSPB reserves are important havens for a huge range of species, and special spaces for our visitors to get closer to nature. We're looking for a volunteer intern to be part of our team to deliver a great visitor experience! What better way to start your career in conservation by gaining some valuable experience in this area. Overall purpose of the role: To assist with the day to day running of visitor operations and ongoing promotion of the reserve. Ensure visitors to RSPB Saltholme nature reserve have an excellent experience. Planning and promoting an engaging programme of reserve events. Main duties on the reserve and in the visitor centre: •Welcoming visitors and providing information about their visit •Working with the reserve's membership recruitment staff to recruit new members to the RSPB •Assisting with Quality Assurance checks to maintain high standards of facilities •Assisting with the planning and delivery of a busy events programme on the reserve: Typical events include family activities such as pond dipping and minibeast hunting and guided walks. Main marketing & promotion duties: •Producing posters, leaflets and publicity material and distribution •Writing news articles for local newsletters and, if necessary, our members magazine •Assisting with content creation for our blog and regional social media posts

The skills you need

Essential: •Excellent people and communication skills •Friendly, approachable, confident talking to people •Ability to work as part of a team •Ability to work on own initiative •Adaptable, self motivated and ready to turn your hand to the multitude of different tasks required on a nature reserve. •Enthusiasm for wildlife and conservation (specialist knowledge not required) •Over 18yrs old •Hold a full driving licence Desirable: •Understanding of customer service, planning and promoting events •Understanding of marketing and promotions through different communication channels •Teaching experience or leading youth groups •Volunteering experience We also need you to be reasonably flexible with your working days as certain events may happen at weekends, evenings and overnight.

Minimum:
Non residential. 3 days a week. 9am to 5.15pm. Weekends included.

Through this volunteer internship we'll offer you: •Training in first aid, safeguarding, data protection, volunteer management, leading guided walks, RSPB membership recruitment, wildlife ID (if required) and manual handling and risk assessments •Experience of planning, delivering and promoting an events programme •Specialist experience of delivering an exceptional visitor experience on a nature reserve •Experience of working in a team, working alongside and in some cases, supervising, other volunteers •An insider knowledge of the RSPB and chance to network with regional staff and explore the many possible visitor related career paths

Return your completed application form to Craig by email by closing date 28th February at 5pm Interviews will take place at RSPB Saltholme on Monday 9th March The successful candidate will be expected to start on Monday 16th March (however start date can be flexible) NB. Our internships are designed to offer work experience but don't guarantee future employment with the RSPB. Interns are welcome to apply for our paid vacancies, but for obvious reasons, an intern would need to have proven themselves in their current role before their volunteering experience will assist an application for a paid post. All the training necessary and background information will be provided and since you'll be giving your time, it's only fair that we offer to reimburse your travel expenses (up to 25 miles). Please note that this is NOT a residential post.
