Fairburn Ings near Castleford in West Yorkshire, protects a complex of wetland habitats created by subsidence in a former coal mining area. They include open water, wet grassland, reedbed and wet woodland. Other habitats, including dry grassland, deciduous woodland and lagoons, have been restored on the former coal spoil heaps. The reserve is important for waterfowl and waders, farmland birds and other wildlife. The RSPB is working to maintain and enhance biodiversity, while developing the reserve as a local centre for nature conservation and environmental education. There is a small visitor centre selling hot drinks and a wide range of RSPB products from books and children's toys to birdcare products.
The reserve can offer a wide variety of tasks throughout the year but particularly welcomes support during the period of July - August when invasive weed control can support large volunteer groups, and again from October through to March when scrub control is necessary to prevent its encroachment on key habitats.
The key volunteer periods described above can support larger volunteer groups of up to 20+ individuals. Outside these periods, smaller groups of between 8 and 12 individuals are preferred. We will provide all necessary tools, materials and protective items (PPE). Please bring appropriate clothing for the time of year - sun hats and sun cream plus lots of water to drink if hot and extra layers and waterproofs during the colder months. Please also wear stout boots or shoes. You are covered by our comprehensive public liability insurance and we provide risk assessments and a safety briefing prior to the start of your day. A warden will be with you at all times and there will always be at least one first aider close-at-hand throughout the day.
Minimum commitment: 1 dayDuration: 10am - 4pm (flexible)Period: July - March
The skills and time provided by corporate teams are incredibly valuable to the RSPB. Corporate work parties help us tackle jobs that would otherwise take our wardens days or even weeks to complete. Employee volunteering also helps us to build community links and valuable business support, and many of our business volunteers return to our reserves with family and friends after their volunteer experience. Some even join as members and become life-long supporters.
