Before you visit

  • Elan Valley visitor centre 10 am to 4 pm (winter) or 5 pm (summer). Closed Christmas Day. Managed by Welsh Water/ Dŵr Cymru
  • Trails open throughout the year outside these hours
  • Free entry, but parking charge for Elan Valley Centre

  • Registered assistance dogs, and other dogs on leads, welcome

How to get here

  • Nearest railway station at Llandrindod Wells, 14.5 miles (23 km) away
  • Bus from Rhayader to Elan Village stops at the Elan Valley Centre.

Car parking

  • Car park at the Elan Valley Centre 
  • Space for 100 cars. Six Blue Badge bays. Drop-off point
  • Tarmac surface
  • Limited lighting
  • No height restrictions.

Visitor centre and shop

  • Visitor centre with cafe and shop 
  • Level and step-free throughout with non-slip carpet or vinyl surfaces
  • Heavy manual external doors open inward and outward
  • Lowered counter at information foyer
  • Seating available in reception
  • Good lighting
  • All text in English and Welsh
  • Some goods may be difficult to reach, but staff available to assist. 

Nature trails

  • Three trails. From the visitor centre follow the Tarmac and crushed stone path towards the dam. Cross the river via the stone footbridge and follow the signposts
  • The first is a circular 'easy access' trail (managed by Welsh Water/Dŵr Cymru). The path surface is compacted crushed stone that is flat or slightly sloping. The return leg of this trail follows the route of the access road back to the Visitor Centre
  • The other two trails branch off the 'easy access' trail and soon turn into narrow compacted earth trails that have steep, muddy sections. For these sturdy footwear is recommended
  • Two seats with backs but no arm rests.

Viewing facilities

  • None, but set in spectacular mountain scenery. Great views along the River Elan and the Caban Coch dam from cafe.

Toilets and baby changing facilities

  • Nearest toilets, including accessible and unisex facilities with baby changing, at the Elan Valley centre
  • Outside opening times, public toilets including accessible facilities, in Elan village.


  • Cafe in Visitor Centre. Self-service with staff available
  • Floor is vinyl and there is a range of seating. 

Picnic area

  • Two picnic tables along the accessible trail and two benches along the long 'red' nature trail.

Education facilities

  • Welsh Water provides education facilities in the summer months. Step-free with level access throughout.  Non-slip carpet flooring. Good lighting. Please call Welsh Water/ Dŵr Cymru Elan Valley Centre on 01597 810880.
