Bus route 2 runs along the A964 past the reserve regularly throughout the day. Up to date travel information can be found on travelinescotland.com.
Cycle route 1 of the National Cycle Network runs along the A964 directly to the reserve.
The reserve is 3.1 miles (5 km) west of Kirkwall off the A964. The main access points are from the car park at Grid Ref HY395069 or from the car park at Waulkmill Bay at Grid Ref HY382068.

Access to facilities
- The track is very rough and often wet and muddy with steep incline up a peat bank.
- Stile at Waulkmill Bay entrance.
- This nature reserve is important for wildlife. RSPB Scotland welcomes responsible access, in line with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
- During the ground-nesting bird breeding season (1 April to 15 August) and in areas with livestock we would ask that you keep your dog close to you, preferably on a short lead and please clean up after your dog.
