Finding bird nests in eggstraordinary places

Nesting season is upon us and it seems that the birds have found some unconventional and strange places to take up residence.

Spring has sprung

Spring has truly sprung in the UK, blossom buds are bursting, birds are singing their morning melodies of the dawn chorus and flitting to and from their nesting sites in search of materials.

Watching wildlife, whether from a window, rooftop, balcony or even online can bring joy to many of us. These birds have brought a smile to our faces by choosing some weird and wonderful spots to raise their young this season.

Creative creatures

From resourceful robins to switched on starlings, here's some of the most surprising spaces we've seen used for nesting

  1. Comfy in some garden furniture
  2. Sheltered in a trouser crotch
  3. In amongst an ashtray
  4. Robins in a rubbish bin
  5. Rumbling on top of a washing machine
  6. Going nowhere in a ford KA
  7. On a deflated paddling pool
  8. Warm and cosy on a Calor gas tank

Older and wiser

Scientists have found that birds can improve their nest making skills with time, meaning the older and wiser birds are more likely to have an innovative nest. Savvy nest building skills are a must, as birds are having to learn to adapt as nature is being squeezed into smaller spaces.
