Wildfire damage at Minsmere
On Wednesday 29 July, RSPB Minsmere was struck by wildfire. Our first priority was to work with the fire service, and RSPB site crews and partners, to contain the blaze, and protect the wildlife that has been left. We’re so grateful for everyone who made this happen.
The threat isn’t over. But now it has stabilised, we can look to the future. Our next job is to start to repair the damage. That’s why we need your help.
Adam Rowlands, the Suffolk area manager for the RSPB says
This is the biggest blaze we've seen at Minsmere in living memory, which has been hugely consequential for the local wildlife.

The blaze has badly affected Minsmere’s largest area of heathland habitat, which many species thrive on. The total area is around 25 hectares.
Rare bird species such as Dartford Warblers, Woodlarks and Nightjars were able to escape the worst of the flames, but returned to find their habitat destroyed. Now we need to repair the damage, and we’re asking for your help.
Why Minsmere needs your help
Minsmere is one of our most important and best-loved reserves – for both wildlife and people. We need to restore it for both. You can be part of this effort: donate to our Minsmere Wildfire Appeal and help us repair the damage.
We have a great track record of restoring heathland, and we know what needs to be done. We just need the funds to do it. Thank you so much for any support you can give.
Why did it happen?
We don’t currently know the cause of the wildfire, but they can occur for all kinds of reasons. They are increasing in severity due to hotter, drier conditions and prolonged dry periods.
We work year-round to help prevent wildfires, and respond quickly when fires occur.
Minsmere is a very popular reserve for visitors, welcoming many thousands of people each year. It’s currently closed to the public, but we’re keen to welcome you back as soon as possible.
