Mill Dam, Shapinsay

Mill Dam is one of Orkney’s important remaining wetlands and a great place to enjoy views of wetland wildlife. The open water is surrounded by a mix of marshy fen and mire habitats as well as areas of flower rich grassland and small areas of dry heathland. The hide offers panoramic views across the reserve and from here you can enjoy watching an array of waders and wildfowl at all times of year.

In spring, enjoy the symphony of sounds as the ducks and waders display across the wetland. Throughout spring and summer Shoveler, Tufted Duck, Wigeon, Teal, Redshank, Curlew, Snipe and Lapwing are all easy to spot. In winter, the reserve welcomes large flocks of wildfowl such as Wigeon, Teal and Mallard, with smaller numbers of Shoveler, Pintail, Whooper Swan and Gadwall, and you can often hear these noisy visitors before entering the hide. The winter months are also the best time to spot a Hen Harrier, Peregrine, Merlin or Sparrowhawk.

The slopes above the wetland have an impressive mix of native wildflowers managed to encourage bumblebees, including the rare Great Yellow Bumblebee.
