The buzz about wildflowers

On a warm summer’s day, a healthy wildflower meadow is feast for the senses: an endless expanse of verdant green festooned with pops of colour from flowering plants, bright butterflies flit from flower to flower, buzzing bees noisily collect sweet nectar, and a cricket’s chirrup adds to the hum of an area alive with activity.

These habitats are vital homes for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects are crucial to food security, contributing to the production of a third of the food we eat. Healthy meadows protect the environment against the impacts of climate change by improving water quality, capturing carbon, and acting as a flood defence.

But worryingly, the UK has lost 97% of our precious wildflower meadows in the last century.

That’s why Ella’s Kitchen and the RSPB are working together to protect and restore an ambitious 30 million square feet of wildflower-rich grassland by 2030, protecting pollinators to safeguard our planet and food supply for future generations.

Our ‘30 by 30’ wildflower target sees Ella’s Kitchen supporting 9 projects across the UK, from Sussex to the Hebrides, helping us to create new areas of species-rich grassland, as well supporting the long-term management and monitoring of existing areas of wildflowers at RSPB reserves.

Little nature lovers

We all have a part to play in protecting our planet. Research shows that positive experiences in nature at a young age are one of the best ways to create lifelong care for the environment. The more connected we feel with nature; the more likely we are to take action to save it.

Ella’s Kitchen and the RSPB have worked together to create an interactive, downloadable map designed to inspire families to connect with nature and discover the birds, bees and bugs that call the UK’s incredible landscapes home.

Ella’s have also supported the delivery of inspirational activity sessions at RSPB Dove Stone and through off-site community outreach events over summer 2025, which will help 150 little nature lovers to discover local wildlife and develop a closer relationship with nature.

Snacks that save nature

In 2025, Ella’s Kitchen launched a brand new snacking product in partnership with the RSPB, Butterfly + Bug Puffs. 5p from every pack sold is donated to the RSPB, helping us to protect and restore nature, offering a tangible way for families to support nature through their everyday shopping while sparking important conversations about the importance of pollinators.

The packs are available in Morrison’s, Ocado and the Ella’s Kitchen website and feature a QR code linking to an interactive online hub filled with fun activities, nature facts and ideas to inspire families to get outdoors together.
